Yarrabilba Family and Community Place

Yarrabilba Family and Community Place

The $3.6m million dollar community-
friendly Yarrabilba Family and Community Place opened its doors on the
8th of October 2018. When fully operational the hub co-located with the Yarrabilba state school will be offering services such as child health clinical
and developmental health checks maternity services and visiting health
specialists, a homework club, music groups and play groups for new and young
parents. Various programs and activities are available: Queensland Government’s
early learning and literacy program, First Five Forever, daily breakfast club,
supported play groups, visiting justice of the peace, and the registry of births
deaths and marriages services. In future Logan City Council will provide
children’s education and arts programs, immunisation services, a bike-fixing
shed, a book exchange, a toy and puzzle library. Construction of the hub is
funded by the Queensland Government, while the community hubs and
partnerships programs has brought together industry, government agencies, and community groups to deliver these integrated and responsive services. I
think this facility is wonderful for this community and such an advantage in
terms of bringing families here and their children. I think over time the
team that will work here will work with a community to deliver what the
community needs and I think that that’s really important. We haven’t taken a
cookie-cutter approach here. I can see things developing over time
and I think that’s the exciting part about community-based facilities and
co-design, is that things develop as the community needs them. Well, first of all, I’d like to say it’s been a real pleasure to be working in
partnership with the Department of Education but CHaPs on this particular
development. We see it as a fundamental shift in how we attend to the
health and well-being of communities and if you look around you at this
particular development in Yarrabilba we can see lots of young families, lots of aspirational families, and we want to be part of building an infrastructure
that’s going to support their children to have the best chance of life possible
and the best start in life possible.
