Spencer Scholar Jayde Lim at Gala Dinner

Good evening everyone
I am from Mauritius a small island located on the southwest part of the
Indian Ocean about five hundred and thirty miles east of Madagascar I am
very far from home it takes me two days to get there but I am very proud and
happy to stand in front of you today as a new member of this industry and share
a little bit about myself and how Spencer has helped me my parents of both
insurance agents in Mauritius so I have been exposed to this industry since I
was very young I would see my dad inputting client’s data into a program
that would come up with an insurance quote ation and it made me wonder how
did the computer calculate that I always had an interest in and comfort level
with numbers and statistics when I was applying to college I asked my mom to
set up a meeting with an actuary so that I could learn more about the program as
I was interested in working with numbers and my dad always encouraged us to work
in business I found it fascinating how precious the work of actuaries was in
determining potential future catastrophes through amazing complex
calculations and models I realized then that I wanted to be an
actuary too and gain that rare skill so I spoke with my cousin Davi about
colleges that offer great actuarial science programs in the United States
he is also a Spencer scholar and is with us tonight and was a senior studying
actuarial science at st. John’s University in New York at that time
while he tried to get me to go to his school I chose Temple University for its
diversity campus life and great professional development program when I
learned I received the Spencer Educational Foundation Scholarship it
was a great relief financially both to me and my family in addition to helping
with tuition I have two younger siblings who also want to go to college and it is
it is almost impossible for more Asians to study in the United States without
any scholarships as our currency is relatively much weaker than the u.s.
dollar more personally being a recipient of the Spencer educational foundation
scholarship has enabled me to focus on my development giving up some hours of
my part-time tutoring job so that I could get more involved with
organizations such as gamma ETA Sigma in fact I just became an officer of the
chapter and look forward to helping other temple risk management and
insurance and actuarial science majors I would not be able to participate in
gamma iota Sigma as an officer if I was not awarded this prestigious scholarship
I am forever grateful to all the donors and supporters of the Spencer
Educational Foundation you are allowing me to take full advantage of the student
experience at Temple and focus on what is important right now my academics and
pre professional development you made all of this possible thank you very much you
