Hi, I’m Mark Mitsui, President of Portland Community College As an essential theme of PCC’s mission and strategic plan Sustainability is deeply engrained in everything that we do at the college From operations to academics and student life As signatories of the Second Nature carbon commitment PCC is dedicated to reducing it’s carbon footprint One way we address this is through our green building practices And a commitment to renewable energy We have a minimum standard of LEED Silver Certification for new buildings PCC has nine LEED buildings, including a path to net zero LEED Platinum center And three solar installments on our campuses Our commitment to green buildings along with efficiency upgrades has helped us to reduce our energy consumption by more than 50 percent PCC was also one of the first schools in the nation To become certified by Bee Campus USA As part of the certification, the college promotes pollinator habitat Provides educational opportunities, and supports an on campus apiary with 9 hives These bees help pollinate our expanding learning garden program Which includes four learning gardens A farm stand, on site composting, community beds and food grown for the cafeteria Our students lead the charge with over $800,000.00 spent to date On student funded sustainability programs to the Green Initiative Fund
Our students lead the charge with over $800,000.00 spent to date On student funded sustainability programs to the Green Initiative Fund This provides funding for projects like our learning gardens Bike rental system, natural building projects, and has helped launch our eco social justice student leader program The college also engages in regional and international efforts to promote sustainability education PCC is a founding member of the greater Portland sustainability education network. Working to implement the UN sustainable development goals And PCC hosted it’s annual sustainability symposium this year
