Modern Cooperative – Hyde Park, Chicago, IL

My name is Tiffany Paige, and I’m co-owner of Modern Cooperative here in Hyde Park. I started Modern Cooperative with the thought that we represent local artists and we carry mid-century modern furniture and the two go together quite well because mid-century modern furniture came out of a time when resources were short after a war and local handmade movement really caught on and got much stronger after the recession and people really had to kind of look inside themselves and become more resourceful, so both movements to me make a lot of sense working together. I think one of the hallmarks of the store is something I feel very proud of is the fact that we carry between 75 and 80, sometimes 90 local artists mainly Chicago-based local artists – greeting cards, jewelry, neckties, cookbooks… I think that the spirit of Hyde Park in general is very welcoming and down-to-earth and has a real sense of community and from day one we were welcomed and people came in and said “welcome to the neighborhood,” and I just thought that was really quite cool in such a large large city where sometimes people are a little standoffish I feel like people here are very warm and inviting and very very friendly. What I like best about Hyde Park being a very new resident is there are so many things to discover here I’ve recently been going to a lot of the free lectures at the Institute of Politics, which is amazing and seeing all the beautiful architecture I feel like this neighborhood still has kept its historic integrity. It just has a really great energy. It’s also very international. When I’m not working my favorite thing to do is to walk the lakefront or bike the lakefront and just be there… It’s so beautiful There’s so many amazing spots you get such a great view of downtown and it’s amazing to live so close to such a treasure. One of my favorite places is Pizza Capri right across the street, A10 is really lovely We also of course love The Promontory… Our new neighbors, Dearborn Denim We’re super excited to have them in and of course The Silver Room – if it weren’t for Eric at The Silver Room I may not have opened this store. He is such an inspiration and such a great person to be next to It just gives you a real sense of community I’m a very social person and I grew up in the south and so to me It’s really important to know neighbors and have that genuine relationship with them, and that’s what I found here…
