Illustration: Design an Adorable Calendar (beginner) | Freepik

Hello, my name’s Mary Keller and I’m a digital artist from Mexico. On this tutorial, I’ll teach you how to create a calendar illustration in Adobe Illustrator, so let’s begin. So first thing we’re going to do is, open the Adobe Illustrator and create a new document. The size really doesn’t matter, mine is 800 by 600. So if you want to follow, create one with those dimensions. I’m going to create a rectangle with a width and a height that is going to be 165 pixels by 31. Then click again to create another rectangle, and I’m gonna input the values here as well. So let’s change this one to 165 or 119. Now, let’s create another rectangle, let’s go 11 by 20. And then what we’re gonna do is, with our Selection tool, we’re going to align these pieces. So first, we’re gonna select both of these, we’re gonna go to Window and we’re going to find Align, or you could use a shortcut Shift + F7. Now in here, make sure that you are showing your options because maybe you have a window like this. So click here and go Show Options. And in here, go on Horizontal Align Center. And then to activate this piece, you have to click again on one of the pieces and you can see that now this is with a thicker outline. And I’ll make sure that the value is zero and the vertical space set it to zero. Now let’s round our corner; so to do that, I can go to my Direct Selection tool and round the corners with these handles all the way to the center. Next, I’m going to remove the stroke and change the color. I have already selected my colors in advance so feel free to use the same or pick your own colors, depending on the mode you want for your calendar. So I’m just assigning the colors to the fiil. And it was a habit, I’m gonna make a copy by while dragging and pressing Alt and Shift to make a copy on the same direction. Now I’m gonna select both of them, then go to Object>Group and let’s align them as well by clicking again on the rectangle to make it the key object. So now that we have this, what I want to do is, while pressing Alt I’m creating a copy on the diagonal. And I’m going to change the fill to this purple color. And then let’s go out find our Transparency window. And if you don’t see it here, just go Window>Transparency. Now let’s change the Blending Mode to… You could go up to Overlay, just like this. Or you could also go to Multiply, and let’s change the Opacity to something lower. So I think 60 would work fine. Now I’m going to cut them by going Edit>Cut or pressing Ctrl + X. Then selecting the rectangle, I’m going to go to this icon and go Draw Inside. Then I’m going to press Ctrl + Shift + V to paste in place and then go back to Draw Normal. Now that I have this, I would like to create a copy. But you can see that if I do that, I’m going to bring the other’s icon, so double click. And you can see that if I do that, I go inside this and I can select the rectangle, Ctrl + C. And now let’s press Ctrl + Shift + V to paste in place only the rectangle. Let’s move it below a little bit. And now let’s change the color to something darker. Now again, I’m going to Ctrl + X, Draw Inside Mode by clicking on this, Ctrl + Shift + V to paste in place. And then just you can just simply double click outside to… to go outside that mode. Now, let’s go and copy the same rectangle so Ctrl + C>Ctrl + V. And let’s change the color to something darker and make sure that everything is aligned. So once I have the shape, what I can do is, go to my Pen tool or press P on my keyboard. Then I’m going to make some legs, so let’s make a point, make another point, make another point and drag a little bit, make another point. And you’re going to get a leg like this. Now, I want to have a copy, so all I have to do is, select the leg, go to right click>Transform>Reflect. Make sure that I’m reflecting on my vertical axis, and press copy. Then while pressing Shift, just move it to the side. Select both of them and group them by pressing Ctrl + G. And align them selecting the key object with that rectangle. Now, let’s go to our Pen tool again by pressing P, and let’s make a line. And then let’s change the color of the stroke to this dark grey. And then while pressing Alt and Shift, I’m creating a copy; selecting both of them Ctrl + X to cut them, select Draw Inside, Ctrl + Shift + V to paste them in place. I’m going to move this a little bit to the top, just a little bit. And now it’s time to… Actually, I’m going to decrease this color, so it’s not that dark and also these lines. Next, I’m going to go to my Pen tool. Now, let’s make a point, then make another one, drag. And you can see that I keep just making a point and dragging a little bit to draw the shape of these hands. So it’s a very simple shape, all you have to do is, make sure that you know exactly where you want your anchor points to be and you don’t add a lot of anchor points you’re really done need on your shape. So as you have it, just right click and Arrange and Send to Back. Now, let’s select it and go Transform>Reflect, and make a copy. Move it to the side, select both of them, group them by pressing Ctrl + G, and align them properly to the center. So now it’s time to make the face of our calendar, so I’m going to go and find my Ellipse tool. So just click on that one. A window like this is going to appear if you just click on your canvas. And let’s change the width and height to something that 9 and 15, so you’re gonna get your ellipse like this. Position it roughly in place, then while selecting and dragging it, just press Alt and Shift to make a copy. Then let’s go to our Pen tool, make a point, make another point and drag it a little bit. You can see that I have a simple line and that could work. So first, I’m going to group my eyes and place them in the right place. And again, align my my mouth. So as I’m saying, this simple line. I don’t want that, I want to give it a little bit of personality, so we can just create my own custom brush. So I’m going to go to my Ellipse tool and let’s draw an ellipse like this, you can see it is 52 x 6. And then when I select it, all I have to do is, change the color to black. And with my Direct Selection tool, I’m gonna go there by pressing A on my keyboard, I can make this part longer. And then again, move this part to the side, so I get a shape like this. I just got it by moving my anchor point, so I’m just gonna select this and drop it on the brushes. This window is going to appear and here, all I have to do is, select Art Brush. Here is the direction and you really shouldn’t matter for this, just make sure that your method of colorization is Tints. And just can tell that your key color is black, so just press OK. Now if I go to that mouth and apply it, you’re going to see it right there. So just like that I made the mouth. You can decrease the weight to something lower, if I want. And I can go to my Pen tool and make some eyebrows. So just creating a line and using my Eyedropper to copy it, I can make my eyebrows and give them some personality with my custom brush. When I group them both and align them, I’m making one the key object. I’m going to bring this lower. And I can delete this shape because I don’t need it anymore, now that I have my custom brush created. So now, I need to add some dates or text to my calendar. So to do that, I can go to Google Fonts, which all of them are free. Let’s go find the font that I like that is called Bree Serif, so right here. You can just download it. And once you do that, you can go to your Type tool by going here click on and you can type your text. So let’s type January. And now, let’s change the font here to the Bree that we just downloaded and we can change the font size to 21, let’s change the color to white. Now, let’s align it to this rectangle by clicking on it making sure that this is a key object and go horizontal and vertical. Now you can drag by pressing Alt and make a copy, double click and now, just type 1. You cannot see it because this is white, but if I change the color, now you see it. Now, all I have to do is, select the right color and let’s change this one to 72. So I can go right click and Create Outline, so I get only the shape. And I can make it a little bit bigger, align it properly to horizontally and vertically. And I can go Ctrl + X to cut it and just double click on this rectangle. You want that had a little shadow and just Ctrl + Shift + V to paste it in place. And as you can see that is right there below my face. So now that I have it, I can go and create an ellipse. So I’m going to create a circle, so let’s make one that is 228 x 228. Let’s fill it with this purple color. Then go right click>Arrange>Send to back. And I’ll select everything but the circle and group it just pressing Ctrl + G or we’re going here to Object>Group. And now let’s select everything, make sure that you are aligning to Artboard, and not to Selection. And then go Horizontal and Vertical Align Center. Now, I can move this circle or actually the calendar a little bit to the top, so they are not centered. Next, I’m going to create this little rectangle, so I’m going to go to my Rectangle tool and go and make one that is 21 x 8. And now I can choose the color to this pink. Now let’s go Effect>Warp>Arc. And… Let’s change this Band, instead of going in a positive number, to a negative number, so -30 is fine. And now I get a shape like this, which is kind of like a confetti type. So while dragging it, I’m going to press Alt to make a copy and make more so around. And then I can rotate them around, so they have the… So they follow the same direction, not the same direction, as they are doing right now. So just with five like this. And I can give each one a different color to make it more festive. So now that I have this, I can go to my Rectangle tool, go to one of the corners, then go to the other. And let’s change the color of this shape to this dark gray. Then go right click>Arrange>Send to back. And I can bring my calendar a little bit lower. Now… Finally, I can go to my Type tool, and let’s type “Happy New Year”. So you have this calendar illustration just in time to celebrate the New Year. Now let’s change the color to the text to white, and decrease the size to 21. Now again, let’s align everything, so just align it horizontally and position it in place. And with this, you are almost done. Now I think the mouth is a little bit on the top, so I could always go double click, and you can see that now I’m inside my group and just bring it down. Let’s change our weight to 1, I think with 1 it was working better. So once you have it in the right position, you are done. And now, you have your calendar ready for the new year. So I hope you have enjoyed this tutorial. Thank you very much for watching. See you next time.
