– But first, most parents
know one of the best modern day punishments for your kids is banning them from social media. It’s like, basically
you’re stealing their life. ‘Cause I have four kids, this is true. So, but one mom and dad decided
to take it a step further when their daughter,
fifteen year old Maddie from Denton, Texas, what’s up Texas? (crowd cheers) Snuck boys into an all
girls sleepover. No, no, no. Her parents gave her a choice.
One month without her phone, or two weeks without it while her parents took control of her
social media. (chuckles) Which is so awesome. Maddie decided to take the two week deal. Here’s what happened. First, her dad posted this. And he wrote, (audience
laughs) and with this he wrote, “”ike, can we save the turtles already? Hashtag parent takeover,
hashtag make better choices, hashtag insta good, hashtag follow me, hashtag save the turtles.” (everyone laughs) ‘Cause he’s a VSCO girl, get it? Then he posted this selfie, with (laughs) with the caption “felt
cute, might delete later.” (laughs harder) (audience clapping) So, Maddie (laughs), it’s the best, Maddie’s here along with her
parents, Tanya and Larry. Y’all please stand up for me. (audience clapping) How did you– First of all, that
cute, maybe delete later was so genius, I mean you’re hilarious. But how did you come up, how did y’all come up
with this punishment? – As, you know a father, my initial reaction was to
jump out of bed that mornin’ when we got the phone call
from the parents mother that she was staying at, jump up outta bed, get in my
car, and drive over there. But Tanya was, as I was
walkin’ out the door she’s like, “Wait, wait, wait, wait. Let’s sit down and talk
about this and come up with a punishment before you go over there and fly off the handle.” So she’s actually the one
that came up with the- – [Kelly] Oh I’m you.
– Yeah. She’s actually the one who
came up with the punishment. – Actually, my husband is
you, too. My kids are screwed. (crowd laughs) – So, I had first suggested
thirty days, and he had said she is in drill team and a lot
of after-school activities, so he said it’s really annoying for us for her not to have her phone when we can’t get ahold
of her. So I was like, “Hey, you know what?
Let’s give her the option, and if she’s gonna embarrass
us at people’s houses and do this stuff, we
will embarrass her back, so let’s just give her
the option of two weeks, and we take her phone and
we take up her social media. – I love you. This is genius.
– [Tanya] Thank you. – My kids hate you right now
’cause I’m totally gonna do it and embarrass them. I mean,
we will have so much fun. Maddie, did you know
that they were posting? Did you know what they were posting? Did they let you see it? – I actually didn’t know until I got to practice that morning
and my friend showed me. I was completely
mortified and embarrassed. It was embarrassing. – Were you kind of
proud, ’cause it’s funny? – Uh, no. No.
– [Kelly] Nope? Not there yet. You’re not there yet. Just so you know, it’s pretty funny. Okay, so now you’re posting
funny TikToks and Instagrams as a family, right?
– Yeah, we are. We actually after this, I
actually got into it so much that I didn’t want her
to have her phone back. (crowd laughs) So I created a family TikTok and Instagram and we all do TikTok and
Instagram as a family now so it’s went from, you know, a punishment – [Kelly] That is super cool. – To a family activity we do now. [crowd clapping]
– Yeah, that’s super cool! Because I think my, I don’t
know about everybody else, but my specific concern with all
that is they’re always attached to it and they’re never present. You know, you’re never having
a conversation with a human. It’s so bad. So that’s really cool! It turned around and you
did it together as a family. Nicely done!
(crowd clapping) So Maddie, here’s the question. Did you actually learn a lesson? (whispers) The answer is yes. – Yes, I did. I will
never sneak boys in again. Boys are a no-no.
(crowd laughs) – I will never let them
find out. That was code. Well, you guys are so great. Thank you so much for being here and giving us great tips for parenting. (crowd claps)
