Explorer Community School

This is Explorer Community School it’s a small choice school of three classrooms and 72 students Our focus is on a multi-age educational environment with strong participation within every classroom You are adding to a multiple of 10 You get to the kids for two years so we get to know them and they get to know us and we get to form a close relationship with their parents which I think enhances their learning. You got your axon stretched out Students are with deep developed friendships for many years. and the teachers are also able to really get a deep understanding of every student and their needs. We do follow the Common Core State Standards and also the district requirements. What we do however is we might maybe take an enhanced approach to that, we supplement it and so we bring in both our own kind of custom-designed units as well as some other curricula to support those standards. Everyone volunteers it just really nice. There is lots of parent involvement and that gives the teachers an ability to really work with the kids and maybe go deeper into subjects that are being taught. Throughout every school day we have volunteers coming into our classrooms to support both academics. They are peer mentors. They might help us by correcting papers and they’re also supporting kind of our logistics too and so they’re really integral part of our daily existence at Explorer. I think students come away with confidence as they leave Explorer because we do work in multi-age groups so they have collaboration skills when they’re younger they get to see the older kids as leaders and then as they move through Explorer they get a chance to be the leader as well. When you’re the younger grade, you have someone to look up to. So when you’re not sure. Like not sure how to spell a word They can really help you better than your other classmates that are the grade. So they like know more than you and as a fifth-grader I like someone to look up to me. We also use parent volunteers in other ways so they get a chance to do, teach actually small groups about something they’re interested in So we have Friday Choice and Explorations . and that’s where parent gets to come in teach multi-age group of kids in the past we’ve had parents come in and teach them how to build robots, how to build wooden cars, photography lessons. So I think that really enhances their learning. At explorer time you can do a lot of fun games. We like to think that our kids get a really well-rounded balanced education Where we’re educating the whole child. So instead of just academics we really try to balance our focus between academics social and emotional and the kids come out really confident
