Drawing & Illustration : How to Draw a Howler Monkey

Okay folks, in this clip, I’m going to teach
you how to draw a Howler monkey. We’ll start off by drawing the head and the shape of the
body in general. One thing about a Howler monkey is their shoulders come up very, very
high, and they kind of almost blend right into the head, so what I’m going to do here
is just kind of draw the rough shape of the body that we’re going for today and just a
general outline. Now this will end up being his head, right in here, right up this top
right here and as we come in we’ll draw his arms, which honestly, the shoulders, like
I said, will come all the way up to his face and going to kind of come down, and these
monkeys, in particular, the Howler monkeys have, like most monkeys, have very, very long,
long limbs. So we’re kind of just setting the outline for the limbs right now. This
will be the stomach, his legs will come out here kind of. It’s always best to draw a monkey
that’s kind of sitting on their haunches ’cause that’s a fairly typical pose for them. Come
down here, and that will be the bulk of the body right there, and obviously, you come
up here and draw a tail as well, just to kind of show that it is in fact a monkey, just
in case you’re not the best artist in the world. Giving them that visual clue is incredibly
helpful. Start up here with his ears. His ears, the Howler monkey’s ears are much higher
up on their bodies than some, other monkeys are. Almost could end up looking like even
a sort of a cat. But it’s not, it’s obviously a, it’s going to look like a monkey when we’re
done. Well one thing that would be good to do right off the bat is give yourself some
sort of facial guidelines because the Howler monkey’s face is kind of situated in a tuft
of flesh right in the dead center of their furry heads. So kind of come in and draw yourself
a little line in there and all this around it will be fur. So the fur kind of comes in
here and surrounds the face. Now, we’ll draw some little tiny beady eyes, right up here
on the top. Howler monkeys have kind of beadier eyes, just like that. Long snout, long for
a monkey anyway. Little nostrils there, and then some lips, which to me kind of look like
they’re pouting if you study what a Howler monkey kind of looks like. Now of course,
you can give your Howler monkey a little bit more personality than this if you so desire.
One good way to do that is give it eyebrows and other kind of characteristics, but I am
just going to give you the basics right now, so that’s generally what the Howler monkey
face is going to look like. Then come down and really give his limbs a lot of definition,
all the way down to the hands, and the legs. We’ve already kind of established the body
early on, so we already have that tail. And everything about their body is kind of tucked
in, too. They like to kind of sit on their feet and have their hands close to their feet
as well, and everything is kind of like that, but once you get the general shape, and the
arms and the face, all those things are really the visual clues that give away what a Howler
monkey is supposed to look like, so basically, you have it all, right there. That is the
Howler monkey.
