Data Impact Fellows 2016 – WIlliam Shankley

My name is Will Shankley. I’m a PhD candidate
at the University of Manchester and my research looks at Polish post-accession migration to
the UK. Since the European Union expanded the Polish population who have moved to the
UK. Since the Brexit vote we want to see whether
this has caused an effect to promote people to decide to leave the UK or to move to other
areas in England and Wales and some of the wider factors surrounding these issues.
The UK Data Service has been very important. Providing a platform for me to access data,
specifically the Census and to know what other data sets are out there which I can include
in my research. To me impact means changing the lives of real
people out on the street. I’ve tried to build this into my research designs so even though
I’m doing something quite theoretical, to constantly engage with the Polish communities
in the Greater Manchester to see whether this research matters to them and how I can address
a need that’s vital to their community.
